[01] Greece full ahead for structural changesThe government is proceeding with important decisions concerning structural changes in the economy this week. Already, on the Prime minister Costas Simitis' orders, the economic staff is speeding up procedures to conclude strategic alliances for the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, Olympic Airways and the Commercial Bank, while the economic and Social Policy committee is to convene on Thursday. In the meantime, in an article published in the Sunday newspaper, "To Vima Tis Kyriakis", Mr. Simitis said that the summit meeting of European Union leaders, to be held in Berlin on June 2 and 3, should give vision and meaning to the future. He pointed out that the globalized economy was creating globalized problems and for this reason, international cooperation was becoming more and more vital.[02] Turkey playing with timeThe Turkish Defence minister Sabachatin Tsakmakoglou expressed his objection to the recent proposal of the Turkish Prime minister's councelor Giouven Erkayia for the abolishment of the Aegean Army. Mr. Tsakmakoglou maintained that since no progress had been made in Greek-Turkish relations on serious issues, such a development could not take place. By serious issues the Turkish Defence minister was referring to the disarmament of the Aegean islands, the Greek airspace and the acceptance on behalf of Greece of the position that Turks live in Western Thrace.In the meantime, the Cypriot Foreign minister Yannakis Kasoulids on Saturday said that the present phase of the Cyprus issue did not allow the Turkish side to play with time. He made the warning on his return from Lisbon, where he had attended a Euro-Mediterranean conference. Referring to a conversation he had in the Portuguese capital with the Turkish Foreign undersecretary, he noted that it had emerged that Ankara was insisting on positions which placed it outside the United Nations resolutions. [03] Stephanopoulos continues his visit to CanadaThe President of the Greek Republic Costis Stefanopoulos is on a seven-day official visit to Canada, accompanied by foreign undersecretary Angeliki Laiou and National Economy undersecretary Yannis Zafiropoulos.Mr. Stefanopoulos was warmly welcomed by the Greek community living in Canada. Mr. Stephanopoulos, who is being accompanied by a numerous delegation of Greek businessmen, is visiting for the first time Canada at a time when both countries are boosting their traditional relations on almost every level. The Greek delegation attended the Mass at the church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary where Metropolitan Sotirios officiated. Then Mr. Stephanopoulos met with representatives of Greek community living there. The President of the Republic will meet with Canadian Governor General Adrian Clarkson, the Prime minister Jean Chretien and the Premier of Quebec Lucien Bousar. [04] Tension over the new identity cards in GreeceIn a speech at the Theological School of Chalki, Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos referred to the issue of the new identity cards to be issued in Greece.Mr. Vartholomeos stated that the Orthodox Church always obeys the laws of the states it functions within, stressing in its long history the Church has been as a law, law abiding. However, he pointed out that did not mean believers should forgo their legal rights. In the meantime, tension seems to be prevailing as to whether the new identity cards should be bearing the holder's religious belief. From its side the government, through its spokesman Dimitris Reppas has stated that the issue regarding the new identity cards was settled, adding that it did not wish to come into juxtaposition with the Church. On his part, Archbishop Christodoulos stressed the need for the Greeks to preserve their national identity within the framework of the European unification. At the same time he also referred to forces which are trying to disengage the nation from Orthodoxy and tradition, with which it has been living with for two thousand years now. [05] Greek delegation visits Berat, Albania Greek ambassador in Tirana, AlbaniaAlexandros Mallias, who was accompanied by a big Greek delegation and by the Albanian Agriculture minister Mr. Zouveli visited Berat at the weekend. Participating in the delegation, which had been invited by the Chamber of Commerse and Industry of the town, were representatives of all the Greek Banks established in Albania and representatives of the Greek-Albanian Chamber.During the visit, the delegation met with officials and businessmen of the town, most of whom have businesses in Greece. [06] Greeks in Belbourne celebrate Battle of CreteEthnic Greeks in Melbourne, Australia honored important historical events at the weekend. The most massive celebration was that of the 59th commemoration of the Battle of Crete, in which representatives of the Greek and Australian armed forces as well as Austrtalian veteran soldiers took part.Additionally, the Melbourne association of Greeks from Chalkidiki and the association of Greeks from Serres organised joint events to celebrate the 179th commemoration of the incorporation of the Ionian islands to Greece.
