[01] Investigation into flight proceduresThe national defence ministry said that an in-depth investigation would be carried out into the procedures and regulations governing the safety of training flights.Four people, including two young women, were killed just before noon when an Hellenic Air Force jet fighter crashed into a village home northwest of Athens. National defence minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos expressed his sorrow at the loss of the two pilots and the two young women and gave assurances that the Air Force would provide every support for the families of the victims and grant compensation for material damage sustained. Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas conveyed the condolences of the Greek government to the families of the victims. [02] EU Parliament approves Greek applicationFulfilling Athens's strong expectations, the European Parliament approved yesterday Greece's application to joint the Euro zone by an overwhelming majority.The 626 member assembly voted by 376 in favour to 42 against and 80 abstentions to approve the report which included an all-important recommendation that Greece be admitted into European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) on January 1, 2001, and become the EU single currency's 12th member. Greek economy enters a new era National economy and finance minister Yannos Papantoniou told reporters, after a meeting with prime minister Costas Simitis, that Greece was entering a new era of stronger competitiveness and with numerous economic prospects. Commenting on the course of the inflation, Mr Papantoniou said the impact from a rising dollar and higher international oil prices was common for all European Union countries, but expressed the hope that these phenomena would prove temporary because the Euro would recover and the price of oil could not remain for ever at the 30 US dollars level. Referring to Telecom and Power market's deregulation, Mr Papantoniou said that both Hellenic Telecommunications Organization and the Public Power Corporation would be partly privatised through structural changes that would ensure workers' rights. [03] Amendment on contract workersInterior minister Vaso Papandreou has prepared an amendment according to which some thousands of contract workers with state services and public utilities for more than 24 months would become civil servants. The long-awaited amendment would be tabled in the Parliament's first summer session.[04] Draft bill on the 2004 Olympic GamesAt the first meeting of the inter-ministerial committee for the organization of the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece, it was decided that a draft bill should be submitted aimed at speeding up proceedings and filling any institutional and legislative gaps.Culture minister Theodoros Pangalos said the efforts for a successful organization of the Athens 2004 Games would strenuous as the country's sacrifices to enter the Euro zone. Opposition New Democracy party leader Kostas karamanlis expressed his support to the efforts of the president of the National Olympic Committee "Athens 2004", Yanna Angelopoulou - Daskalaki. The Olympic flame will be delivered to the organizers of the Sydney Olympic Games at the Panathinaikon Stadium, Athens, tomorrow. [05] Vartholomeos visits AlexandroupolisEcumenical patriarch Vartholomeos is paying a two-day visit to Alexandroupolis.
