    [01] Athens stock exchange

    On Tuesday, the Athens stock exchange, the general share price index closed below the limit of 4,000 points, dropping by 2.77%, while in New York the Dow Jones index went up by 1.75% and the Nasdak index by 7.19% at the end of the trading session.

    Meanwhile, the course in European and Asian money markets was upward with only the Nikkei index lossing 99.83 points.

    The governor of the Bank of Greece Loukas Papadimos is expected to announce today 0,50% reduction in interest rates.

    [02] Greece meets the inflation criterion

    Inflation in Greece rose to 2,8% in March compared to 2,6% in February. However, the annual harmonized Greek inflation formulated to 2% thus meeting for the second consecutive month the inflation criterion for admission to the European Monetary Union.

    According to the European Statistical Service monthly report the annual rate of inflation of the 11 countries of the Euro Zone rose from 2,0% in February to 2,1% in March.

    The countries with the highest rate of inflation are Ireland with 5%, Finland with 3,2%, Denmark, Spain and Luxemburgh with 3%. The countries with the lowest rate of inflation are Britain with 0,7% and Portugal and Sweden with 1,4%.

    [03] Pasok executive office convenes today

    Pasok's executive bureau will convene today to assess the election results, while on Thursday, Mr Simitis will speak to deputies at a meeting of the party's parliamentary group on the government's priorities and the speeding up of the government's work.

    The parliamentary group of the opposition New Democracy party will also meet today and the party's leader Kostas Karamanlis will speak at the meeting.

    [04] Greek and Turkish businessmen meet in Athens in April

    The Anatolia news agency reports that representatives of the Ancara Trade Chamber will vistit Athens to participate in the Greek-Turkish " Friendship Exhibition" which will take place in Athens on 21- 22 April.

    The president of the chamber and head of a 210 member delegation, Sinan Aigun underlined that the people of the two countries should take initiatives for permanent peace between Greece and Turkey.

    Issues to de discussed during Mr.Aigun visit to Athens are cooperation between the countries in the tourist sector, the setting up of a joint work group aimed to improve Greek- Turkish relations and the organisation of a joint Greek- Turkish exhibition in Ancara next year.

    [05] Balcan countries meeting in Thessaloniki

    At their meeting in Athens , Greek foreign minister George Papandreou and the special coordinator for the Balkan Stability Pact Bondo Hobah decided that the regional meeting of the Balcan Stability Pact member countries take place in Thessaloniki on June 9th and 10th. The date selected is symbolic as it marks the first anniversary of the end of the Nato bombing against Yugoslavia.

    [06] President Stefanopoulos will pay a visit to Canada

    Following an invitation by the Canadian General Governor Adrien Clarkson, Greek President Constantinos Stephanopoulos will pay an official visit to Canada from May 27th to June 2nd. Mr. Stephanopoulos will be accompanied by Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou.

    On the sidelines of his official meetings, Mr.Stefanopoulos will visit Greek communities in Canada.

    Mr. Stephanopoulos will arrive in Ottawa on May 27.On the 28th he will attend the mass at Virgin Mary Cathedral and later he will visit the Canadian Culture Museum in Hull.

    [07] Australian deputy of Greek descent resigned

    Australian federal deputy of Greek descent Andreas Theofanus announced his resignation from the Labour party but said he would remain in parliament as an independent deputy.

    He explained that he resigned because of his basic arguments with the Labour party's new line on immigration and cultural issues as well as because of the "war" against him by the party's establishment.

    It is believed that in the next elections Maria Vamvakinou also of Greek descent, will be a candidate for the Colwell seat.

    [08] Prime minister Simitis met with the Israeli minister for regional development Simon Peres

    Prime minister Simitis met with the visiting Israeli minister for regional development Simon Peres.

    Reports say that at the meeting,Mr.Peres asked Mr.Simitis for Greece's mediation in securing the release of 13 Jews arrested by the Iraqui regime on charges of espionage.

    There are also reports of a decision to set up a group of Greek and israeli experts to look into Greece's participation in the Middle East development plan.Mr. Simitis also met with the president of the World Council of Hellenes abroad.

    [09] Greek basketball team in the Euro league finals

    Greek basketball team Panathinaikos will play against Macabi next Thursday in the Euro League finals, following its victory over Efes Pilsen yesterday by 87-71.
