[01] 2000 STATE BUDGET FINALIZED
Prime minister Kostas Simitis and national economy minister Yannos
Papantoniou yesterday discussed the details of the new state budget and
the cost of the recent earthquake in Attica. Mr Papantoniou said the
state budget for the year 2000 has been finalized and will be tabled in
parliament in early November. In the meantime, tension prevailed in
parliament during yesterday's debate on the new tax bill. Mr
Papantoniou described the draft bill as beneficial for the people and
socially just, while opposition New Democracy party leader Kostas
Karamanlis said it was fragmentary and sketchy.
[02] MORE MEASURES FOR QUAKE-STRICKEN POPULATION IN ATTICA
Prime minister Kostas Simitis yesterday had a meeting with minister for
the environment, planning and public works Kostas Laliotis and interior
minister Vasso Papandreou. After the meeting, Mr Laliotis said
measures and incentives would be announced soon for the transfer
elsewhere of production plants in Attica which suffered damage in the
recent quake. Quake-stricken people whose houses collapsed during the
7th September earthquake will be granted free construction permits to
build new homes. Special urban planning offices in municipalities and
prefectures will grant the permits, with the help of experienced public
sector engineers to be hired for a period of 8 months for the purpose.
Meanwhile a National Statistics Service census indicates that 67,000
households and 6,300 businesses in 33 municipalities in Attica were
struck by the earthquake. The first settlement of prefabricated houses
offered to the quake-stricken population of Menidi by the armed forces
was inaugurated yesterday, in the presence of defence minister Akis
Tsohatzopoulos and military leaders.
[03] GREEK PRESIDENT STARTS VISIT TO IRAN
President of the republic Kostis Stefanopoulos is paying a 4-day
official visit to Iran, accompanied by foreign minister Giorgos
Papandreou and agriculture minister Giorgos Anomeritis. On the occasion
of Mr Stefanopoulos' visit to Iran, the Greek embassy in Tehran has
organised a series of events under the general title "Greece-Iran: a
dialogue of cultures."
[04] PRIME MINISTER CONGRATULATES ALBANIAN SOCIALIST PARTY LEADER
Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis has sent a cable of congratulations
to Albanian veteran politician Fatos Nano, who was elected leader of
Albania's ruling Socialist party. In his telegram, Mr Simitis said he
hoped Greek-Albanian relations would be promoted further to the benefit
of both the Greek and Albanian peoples, and was looking forward to
closer cooperation between PASOK and the Albanian Socialist party.
[05] GREECE'S CONSENT TO TURKEY'S EU ACCESSION DEPENDS ON ANKARA
Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said yesterday the recent message
from prime minister Kostas Simitis to Turkish prime minister Bulent
Ecevit made it clear that Greece's consent to Turkey's accession to the
European Union would depend on Ankara's stand.
[06] 55TH ANNIVERSARY OF ATHENS' LIBERATION AFTER WORLD WAR II
A special commemorative event was held on the Athens Acropolis
yesterday by the municipality of Athens to mark the 55th anniversary of
the city's liberation from German occupation after the Second World
War. Attending the event were mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos,
justice minister Evangelos Yannopoulos, first deputy speaker of the
house Panayotis Kritikos, deputies and representatives of resistance
organizations.
[07] AMERICAN OFFICIALS TO VISIT ATHENS, ANKARA AND NICOSIA
Special American presidential envoy for the Cyprus issue Alfred Moses
and American state department special coordinator Thomas Weston will
visit Athens, Ankara and Nicosia in mid-October.
[08] PRIME MINISTER MEETS WITH PASOK SECRETARY
Prime minister Kostas Simitis and PASOK secretary Kostas Skandalidis
met yesterday and discussed coordination between the party and the
government.
[09] DEFENCE MINISTER VISITS ISRAEL
Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos is beginning a three-day official
visit to Israel today.
[10] BLACK SEA COOPERATION BUSINESS CONFERENCE ENDS IN ATHENS
The sessions of the business conference of Black Sea Cooperation, which
are focused on economic cooperation between Black Sea countries and the
European Union are winding up today. Participating in the two-day
conference, which is taking place in the framework of the Greek
presidency of the Organisation of Black Sea Economic Cooperation, are
politicians and economic cadres.
[11] NEW STUDY FOR ATHENS ACROPOLIS MUSEUM
The Central Archaeological Council yesterday annulled the blueprints
approved 10 years ago for the construction of a new Athens Acropolis
museum and recommended that a new research project be carried out.
