  • [01] Moscovici urges lenders to agree on comprehensive deal for Greece

BRUSSELS (ANA/C. Vasilaki) - European commissioner in charge of Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici called on Greece's lenders to agree on a comprehensive deal for the country, in a statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Friday.

"I am aware how difficult it has been for the Greek government and the parliament to take these decisions that bring us a large step closer to completing the second program review. We now need all partners to cooperate constructively to achieve a comprehensive agreement," he said, commenting on the Greek parliament's approval on Thursday of a new round of prior actions.

"It's is time to open a new and optimistic chapter for Greece," he added.

[02] Pontic Greek Genocide is 'painful chapter in collective memory', says ND leader

The genocide of Pontic Greeks by Ottoman Turks constitutes a "dark page in history" and a "painful chapter in our collective memory," New democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a statement on Friday, marking the Remembrance Day.

"[It was] The systematic effort to exterminate the Greeks of the Pontus through mass executions, violent displacements and unspeakable atrocities which cost the lives of 353,000 Pontic brothers. These were historic moments which revealed the greatness of Hellenism, against a crime fueled by chauvinism, racism and intolerance. It is our duty to keep the historical memory alive," he said.

[03] Olympiacos to play in Euroleague final after beating CSKA Moscow

Olympiacos B.C. has earned the ticket to the Euroleague final on Sunday after beating rivals CSKA Moscow during a hard-won game in Istanbul on Friday evening.

This will be the 8th final for the Greek team after playing in 10 Euroleague final four matches and the fourth successive time that it beat CSKA Moscow to the final.

Uncowed by the European champion and its 43-million-euro budget, the Olympiacos team extracted victory with a score of 82-78 and must now strive to win their fourth European trophy in the Sinan Erdem dome, where they won their second trophy in 2012.

The Greek team must wait to see whether their opponents for the trophy will be Turkey's Fenerbahce or Real Madrid.

[04] State of emergency declared on Agios Efstratios after locusts descend on the island

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection declared a state of emergency on the small island of Agios Efstratios late on Thursday night, due to problems caused by a massive locust infestation that has literally decimated the island's plant life.

According to the Northern Aegean Regional authority, which requested the state of emergency on the island, this will help overcome bureaucratic obstacles and speed up planned actions to deal with the problem, which dates back several years and has now spread to the entire island.

Agios Efstratios Mayor Maria Kakkali said this would begin with aerial spraying of the entire island in June, while the municipality has also collaborated with scientists at Athens Agricultural University for an environmentally-friendly solution to the problem that has proved effective. Kakkali also clarified that the problem with the locusts has an impact on the island's animal and plant life but does not affect visitors in any way.
