  • [01] Pavlopoulos: Implementation of international law a 'symbol of Greek-Turkish friendship'

President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Tuesday visited the tiny island of Pserimos for a celebration of the island's 70th anniversary since the Integration of the Dodecanese island group into the Greek state.

"The symbol of Greek-Turkish friendship is the correct implementation of international law, as befits democratic and peaceful peoples," Pavlopoulos said in a statement from out of the island's military outposts.

He also repeated his "double message" to neighbouring Turkey, saying it was one of sincere friendship, good neighbourly relations and cooperation in difficult times. "We urge it, through Greece, to follow its European path, as befits its people and its democracy," he said.

At the same time, he added, "we send a message that we are here to defend ourselves, respecting and implementing international law and European law as a whole. Especially the Lausanne Treaty, the sovereignty, the borders and, of course, the territorial integrity of Greece, which are also, since Greece is a member state of the EU, the borders, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the EU," he stressed.

[02] Aim is to make Greece a natgas energy portal for SE Europe and Balkans, Stathakis says

Greece's geographic position makes it a "key country" for the energy transfer sector and a stabilising factor for the surrounding region, Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis said on Tuesday while opening the Mare Forum Greece conference in Athens. The government's goal was to exploit this and transform Greece into a natural gas energy portal for southeastern Europe and the Balkans, he said.

Analysing Greece's role in ensuring energy security and a diversified energy supply on a regional and European level, Stathakis said the government was supporting plans for the Southern Gas Corridor, participating in the planning for the EastMed pipeline as an additional gas transfer route, continuing the country's transformation into a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) portal for southeastern Europe and the Balkans and seeking to exploit its own hydrocarbon reserves at sea while respecting the environment.

Stathakis also spoke about the prospects of the fossil fuel sector in light of the surveys conducted in the Ionian Sea and south of Crete.

[03] Eurostat: Greek GDP contracted 1.2 pct on quarterly basis, 1.1 pct yr/yr in 4th quarter 2016

BRUSSELS (ANA/ C. Vasilaki) Greece's GDP contracted at rate of 1.2 pct in the 4th quarter of 2016 relative to the 3rd quarter of the same year and 1.1 pct in relation to the 4th quarter of 2015, according to figures released by Eurostat on Tuesday.

In the same period, the Eurozone's total GDP increased 0.4 pct relative to the 3rd quarter of 2016 and 1.7 pct relative to the 4th quarter of 2015. For the 28 European Union countries as a whole, the increase relative to the 3rd quarter 2016 was 0.5 pct and the increase on an annual basis was 1.9 pct. The increase was driven mainly by higher consumer spending.

Greece was the only EU country to experience recession in that period.
