  • [01] Mayor accuses SYRIZA MPs of attempting to block the investment in Hellinikon

The mayor of Hellinikon and Argyroupoli, Yiannis Konstantatos, accused 18 SYRIZA MPs of attempting to block a massive investment project on the site of Athens' old airport, by trying to have it declared as archaeological site.

"Amid Greece's economic destitution, some people are trying to create obstacle so that the largest investment in Europe is cancelled," Konstantatos said.

"The former airport operated for 75 years without anyone raising an issue of antiquities. [The privatization agency] HRADF and the investor have already designated in the investment plan areas of archaeological interest.

"Trying to proclaim derelict buildings as 'New Monuments', the 'discovery' of woodland and now the efforts to demarcate the entire former airport as an archaeological site are lame excuses to cancel the investment," he added.

The SYRIZA deputies submitted a question to the ministries of Culture, Environment and Finance calling for parts of the former airport to be declared archaeological areas.

Lamda Development along with Chinese conglomerate Fosun, Abu Dhabi-based real estate firm Al Maabar and other investors won the 99-year lease in 2014. The consortium will invest around 7 billion euros to transform the 1,530-acre area into a coastal complex of hotels, residences and shops.

[02] 'Save the Children' starts operation of new school for refugees in Leros

A new educational facility called "LEDU" was opened on the island of Leros on Thursday, aiming to help around 170 children integrate smoothly in Greek schools and continue their education.

The school, located in the area of Lepida, will welcome children aged six to 18 in three classrooms, where pupils will be taught Greek, English, mathematics, geography, computers and art. They will be taught by Greek teachers and personnel from the charity organization "Save the Children".

The school teaches around 80 students per day, to accommodate all the refugees enlisted in the program.

"With LEDU we strengthen the educational process of children and help them integrate in the educational system, after a long and arduous period away from classrooms," said Andreas Ring, "Save the Children's" Greece Humanitarian Representative.

The creation and operational costs of "LEDU" are covered by the European Union and the UNHCR, while the operation and organization of the school is managed by "Save the Children".

[03] Museums and archaeological sites closed on Monday due to strike

Museums and archaeological sites throughout Greece will be closed on Monday due to a 24-hour warning strike declared by the Panhellenic Union of Employees for Guarding Antiquities. The museum and site guards are demanding that they continue to receive Sunday, holiday and overtime pay from the Archaeological Receipts Fund and that the government immediately withdraw a bill on the fund's re-organisation, as well as the hiring of an additional 200 guards announced by the prime minister in December

[04] Tram and Athens metro workers to strike from noon until 15:00 on Friday

Workers on the Athens trams, metro and the electric railway (metro line 1) will hold a three-hour warning strike from noon until 15:00 on Friday, protesting against legislation handing over exploitation of Attiko Metro stations and other assets to the Athens public transport body OASA.

According fixed-rail public transport workers, the measure will cause "huge and irreparable harm to their organisation STASY, depriving it of legal revenues, devaluing it and finally undermining its public and social character."
