[01] Tsipras: We are determined to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem"Once again we state our determination to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem in the framework of UN resolutions but also of Cyprus' status as an EU member state," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on exiting the Presidential Mansion on Tuesday, following a meeting with the President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos to brief him on developments concerning the Cyprus issue. He said the Greek side will fully exhaust all options, right up to the last minute, to find such a solution but also that the final result "does not depend on one side only."The fact that there was a common view among the political forces on the standing positions of the Greek side was especially positive, Tsipras added, as was the "full support of the Greek political world for the efforts of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades for a good outcome and a viable and just solution." Cyprus' EU status reinforces the arguments of the Greek side, which considers inconceivable any plan for a solution that allows third countries rights of intervention and occuption troops, he added. The prime minister noted that any solution must, at the end of the day, be for the benefit of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and one that is viable, functional and "removes the fear from the Cypriot people." "In this direction, I consider that, apart from a strong national line, a common European line is also formed because these arguments are arguments that are compatible both with international and European law," he said. Asked if he will go to Geneva, Tsipras joked that the previous days' snow had brought Geneva to Athens "so we shall see." [02] Police sources say notes listing names of PM, other politicians found in Roupa's apartmentPolice have discovered rough notes listing the names of politicians, including that of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, while searching the apartment occupied by convicted terrorist Pola Roupa at the time of her arrest, a police source said on Tuesday. In addition to Tsipras, the notes also included main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis and former prime minister Antonis Samaras.[03] Top court prosecutor asks judges to reject Turkish extradition request for first two officersSupreme Court prosecutor Vasiliki Theodorou recommended the rejection of Turkey's extradition request for two Turkish army officers accused of participating in the country's foiled coup attempt last July, arguing the case is legally inadmissible, as the evidence provided by the neighbouring country's authorities were "vague".Theodorou's oral arguments were heard in the first hearing out of three which will determine the fate of the eight officers in Greece's top court. The officers fled to Greece with a military helicopter after the attempted coup and have been detained ever since pending their trial. She also said that if they were extradited, they would not have a fair trial and could possibly be tortured. "There is a serious risk of torture, inhuman and degrading treatment, as well as a risk to be tried by judges who do not guarantee an independent and unbiased judgment," the prosecutor said. Theodorou also said the transcripts of the hearings in the lower courts, the documents presented and the arguments made in the courtroom show that the conditions for an extradition, as laid down in articles of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), are not in place and there are no specific evidence. According to the prosecutor, the description of the alleged crimes in the indictment is "completely vague". In her closing remarks, she also spoke of the hundreds of journalists, judges, prosecutors, civil servants, lawmakers and ordinary citizens who have been detained, arrested or fired during the purge carried out by Turkish authorities. The court judges said they will announce their ruling on January 23. The Euro-Med Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the quake had a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was eight kilometres northwest of Rio. [05] Environment and energy ministry urges consumers to avoid unnecessary power usage during peak hoursThe environment and energy ministry on Tuesday advised consumers to avoid unnecessary use of power during the hours of peak consumption, between 18:00 and midnight, as a precaution so as to ensure an adequate supply. Consumption of both electricity and natural gas has risen sharply during the recent cold weather, creating a supply shortage.Authorities have already banned all exports of power and have prepared a plan for power cuts to large-scale consumers to avoid more serious problems. Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis on Tuesday called a meeting at the ministry to coordinate action for ensuring an uninterrupted supply of electrical power and gas to consumers as a cold front sweeps Greece and neighbouring countries.
