  • [01] Government aims at growth based on infrastructure projects around Greece, says spox

The government is pursuing a growth based on infrastructure projects throughout the country, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said on Wednesday, during a visit to Corinth.

"The government is committed to developing not only Corinth, but the entire region. We pursue a development that is based on infrastructure projects in all regions of the country," he said during a meeting with Corinth mayor Alexandros Pnevmatikos.

Commenting on an earlier visit to the city hospital, Tzanakopoulos said the government will also support the national health system with the hiring of new doctors.

"In unfavorable conditions and given the budgetary constraints, we are trying to reverse the situation that was created mainly after 2009, when the national health system was impaired and millions of citizens lost access to it," he said. "Already we have made the first steps in one-and-a-half year to reverse this trend and in 2016, 3,600 doctors were hired," he added.

[02] Regency Casino Mont Parnes appeals against VLT roll-out in Greece at Council of State

The Regency Casino Mont Parnes has filed an appeal at Council of State against a decision by the Hellenic Gaming Commission which will allow the rolling out of 35,000 video lottery terminals (VLTs) throughout Greece, saying it is against the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), the Greek constitution and law.

According to the Commission's decision on Oct. 25, 18,500 gaming cabinets will be placed in major towns as well as in general residential areas, districts, neighborhoods, touristic and recreation areas, while the other 16,500 will be operated at the retail network of Greek gambling operator OPAP. The 18,500 slot machines will also operate with extended opening hours, without limitations regarding play time and on a 24-hour basis during holidays.

In its appeal, Regency Casino Mont Parnes, argues that the Commission's decision violates TFEU and Greek law, but also will create "gambling playgrounds" with VLTs pushing people towards gambling. It also says the decision violates a 2011 law on gambling regulations which aims at protecting consumers, youngsters and vulnerable groups from wasting money and that the operation of the VLTs will create direct competition to the Casino.

[03] Traffic on section of Parnitha mountain stopped due to snowfall

Traffic on mountainous Parnitha Avenue was interrupted at the section where the cable car leads to the Casino Mont Parnes due to heavy snowfall, traffic police said on Wednesday. Greece is experiencing a cold spell which will affect Athens and continue through the New Year, according to the national weather service.

Ferry services from the country's main ports – Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio – have so far continued uninterrupted but the coast guard has urged travellers to contact local port authorities before setting out on their trip for possible changes in schedules. The only services suspended are Kyllini-Kefallonia, Igoumenitsa-Lefkimi and routes from Volos to the Sporades islands.
