[02] Greek population drops by roughly 30,000 as deaths overtake births in 2015

Greece's population declined by 29,365 individuals in 2015 as the death rate overtook births, without calculating the effect of migration, the Hellenic Statistical Authority ELSTAT reported on Friday.

According to ELSTAT figures, there were 91,847 births (47,294 boys and 44,553 girls) in 2015, down 0.3 pct compared with 2014. Of these births, 79,904 were to mothers of Greek nationality (87 pct) and 11,943 to mothers of foreign nationality (13 pct). The average age of mothers rose to 31.3 years, up from 31 years in 2014, and births to unmarried mothers accounted for 8 pct of the total.

The number of deaths in 2015 came to 121,212 individuals, up 6.6 pct compared with 2014, of which 61,798 were men and 59,414 were women. The average age at death rose to 76.1 years for men (from 75.5 years in 2014) and 81.6 years for women (from 81.2 years in 2014). Infant mortality, as measured by infant deaths per 1,000 live births, rose to 3.96 in 2015 from 3.75 in 2014.

There were 53,672 marriages in 2015, up 1.1 pct compared with the previous year, of which 27,253 were registry office marriages and 26,419 were religious ceremonies. The average age of women at their first marriage was 30.4 years (up from 30.2 years in 2014) and the average of men at their first marriage was 33.1 years, up from 32.9 years in 2014. There was also a 66 pct increase in civil partnership agreements.

[03] Search for Ben Needham interrupted after legal challenge from landowner

A legal challenge on Friday temporarily stopped an excavation underway on the Aegean island of Kos to find Ben Needham, a toddler that went missing while holidaying on the island with his family in 1991. The owner of the land has sought a magistrate's order to stop the search launched by British Police from South Yorkshire, after Roman-era graves were found on the site.

According to sources, however, the digging may soon resume after judicial authorities consult with the island's archaeological service to allow the search to continue, possibly later on Friday. The work has been monitored by a representative of the archaeological service since it began on Monday, as the likelihood of finding antiquities was deemed high.

So far, despite a thorough and intensive search, there has been no evidence to back up the claim that Ben Needham, who disappeared 25 years ago, might have been accidentally crushed and subsequently buried by a digger working on the site.

The team of South Yorkshire police are determined to continue their search, however, both at the specific site and in the surrounding area.
