[01] Fire in northern Evia under control, authorities report
A wildfire that swept over northern Evia, burning roughly 2,000 hectares
of forest on the island, was under control all along its length on Sunday
afternoon, the fire brigade reported. The fire began in the region known
as Farakla at noon on Saturday and had spread to the seaside resort of
Katounia in the Limni area within a few hours.
The first light of day on Sunday revealed "incalculable damages" and
severe ecological destruction in the Limni area, authorities said.
Fire-fighting forces the fight was continuing to fully extinguish the
blaze, while they remained on alert for possible flare-ups since the
winds are expected to increase in strength from the afternoon.
