  • [01] Greece turns down Austrian Interior Minister's request to visit Athens

Greece has turned down a request by Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner to visit Athens for explanations.

The Greek side cleared out that this cannot happen unless measures against Greece are lifted, diplomatic sources on Friday said to ANA-MPA.

Austria has taken a step back after the tough stance of the Greek Foreign Ministry, which on Thursday called the Greek ambassador to Vienna Chryssoula Aliferi for consultations in Athens.

[02] President Pavlopoulos: The austerity policy has led the eurozone on the brink of an economic crisis and a monetary suffocation

The austerity policy has led the eurozone on the brink of an economic crisis and a monetary "suffocation," President Pavlopoulos on Friday said during the Delphi Economic Forum, held at the European Cultural Centre of Delphi.

"Provided that Greece is and will remain in the core of the European Union, and the eurozone, its development perspectives, under sustainability and social rights terms, are undoubtedly dependent on the development course of the EU environment," Pavlopoulos underlined.

He also stated that this syndrome of the deteriorating economic suffocation of the eurozone is, in large part, a result of the overexposure to the inherent risks of an austerity policy and accused the European Central Bank (ECB) of lacking the required institutional and political means to play the significant role of other central banks, such as Fed. "The primary goal that is called to play is ensuring the stability of the price level and economic growth," he said.

[03] Greek budget shows 1.189 bln euro primary surplus in Jan

Greek state budget recorded a surplus of 1.073 billion euros in January, the Finance ministry said on Friday. In a report, the ministry said that the primary surplus was 1.189 billion euros.

Based on an amended cash basis, the state budget recorded a surplus of 1.073 billion euros in the first month of 2016, from a surplus of 367 million euros in the same month last year, surpassing a budget target for a surplus of 197 million.

The primary result showed a surplus of 1.189 billion euros, from a surplus of 443 million in 2015 and a budget target for a surplus of 307 million euros.

Net revenue was 4.214 billion euros, up 10.3 pct from budget targets. Regular budget net revenue amounted to 3.649 billion euros, down 0.4 pct from targets.

State budget spending totaled 3.141 billion euros in January, down 483 million from targets. Regular budget spending amounted to 3.006 billion euros, down 469 million from targets and down 167 million euros compared with January 2015.
