  • [01] Mitsotakis refers to 'slow reflexes' by govt, Europe over refugee/migrant crisis

Main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday said he is committed to do everything possible to make the problem of irregular migration manageable and avoid any possibility of Greece being expelled from the Schengen zone.

In a statement issued after his meeting with Alternate Minister for Migration Policy Yiannis Mouzalas, held earlier in the day, Mitsotakis said ministries have to coordinate more effectively to deal with the problem, while he urged Europe to help.

He also accused the government of underestimating the intensity, scale and complexity of the issue for many months and showing "slow reflexes", although he added that Europe is also to blame for the slow response.

"It is clear that we need a much better coordination between all the ministries involved. Unfortunately, the European Union also showed great delay in dealing with the problem. But the challenge is common," the leader of New Democracy noted, adding that Greece expects the strengthening of Frontex's units and the faster resettlement of refugees in other member states.

[02] Greece, Turkey discuss readmission of migrants, trafficking

Ways to strengthen Greek –Turkish cooperation in order to reduce the flow of refugees and irregular migrants, as well as efforts to better combat migrant trafficking were discussed at a second meeting of the Greek-Turkish joint working group, which convened at the foreign ministry on Monday.

According to the ministry, an emphasis was placed on the need to implement a bilateral readmission protocol as well as measures agreed upon between the EU and Turkey to effectively reduce the unprecedented refugee and migration flows from Turkey that target Greece.
