  • [01] OPAP subsidiary to assume pari-mutuel horse track betting in December

Horse Racing SA, a subsidiary of OPAP Investments Ltd, will assume operations of the currently inactive pari-mutuel horse racing concession in Greece, beginning on Dec. 10, following an approved deal with the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF).

The agreement paves the way for a down payment of 40.501 million euros by the company, the winning bidder in a tender to win the concession for the right to organize and operate pari-mutuel horse racing betting in the country.

A 20-pct advance payment will be transferred to HRADF on Nov. 27, while a second installment, covering 30 pct of the tender price, will be paid on Dec. 10.

The concession agreement between HRADF and Horse Racing SA was signed in April 24 and was ratified by Parliament on Oct. 23.

[02] Police arrest Cuban man suspected of pulling off major Havana museum heist

Greek police on Wednesday arrested a Cuban national suspected of stealing 71 artworks from the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana last year.

Authorities believe the man, for who is wanted by Cuban authorities, intended to sell the artworks abroad.

The paintings were stolen during a massive heist in March 2014, when about 100 paintings disappeared from the museum's storage. Following the theft, some of the artworks turned up in Miami, with an investigation started when an art dealer alerted the FBI.

The 36-year old man was located by a police unit specializing in arts and antiquities trafficking in the eastern Attica prefecture town of Koropi. He had been living in the residence of a 40-year-old local man, who was also arrested for violating laws on gun possession, after police found a handgun in his house.

Both suspects were led before the prosecutor.
