  • [01] Tsangari's "Chevalier" wins top prize at London Film Festival Awards

The comedy "Chevalier" directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari, a Greek director, has won the top prize in the British Film Institute's 59th London Film Festival.

After the success of her previous film Attenberg, which had gained her an international acclaim in 2010) Tsangari, with the collaboration of the screen writer Efthimis Filippou (who has signed the scripts of universally acknowledged films, such as Alps, The Lobster, and the Oscar-nominated Dogtooth, which Tsangari herself produced), returns with a new film, a study of men's behaviour, of astonishing originality and wit.

Announcing the result on Saturday, Pawel Pawlikowski, director of last year's winning film, "Ida", described Chevalier as "a study of male antagonism seen though the eyes of a brave and original film-maker. With great formal rigour and irresistible wit, Tsangari has managed to make a film that is both a hilarious comedy and a deeply disturbing statement on the condition of western humanity."

The film depicts the fishing excursion on a yacht of six men in mid-winter, during which, and after a mechanical breakdown, are entangled in a competition while playing "Chevalier," a game designed to determine who is "best in everything." The film-maker follows in full detail the behavioural changes and the mechanics of relations between them, as the pressure escalates.
