  • [01] Lafazanis leads 'Popular Unity' parliamentary group

Twenty-five SYRIZA deputies on Friday decided to become independent and form a new parliamentary group "Popular Unity" with Panagiotis Lafazanis as its leader.

The new parliamentary group outnumbers the third elected party in parliament Golden Dawn and according to the constitution will receive the third mandate to form government.

[02] PASOK leader Gennimata: Tsipras an 'escapist from responsibility'

ANA-MPA - Opposition PASOK leader Fofi Gennimata accused Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who submitted his resignation on Thursday and called for early elections, of being "an escapist from responsibility."

In a written statement, Gennimata said, "Unfortunately, every time it's time for action, he chooses escape," charging that Tsipras did that once with the referendum, when the country came face to face with Grexit and chaos, and now instead of using the political leverage he has through the stance of political parties and his European partners, he uses the excuse of his party SYRIZA's split to justify elections.

The opposition leader also called Tsipras and his government "unfit and unable to negotiate and to improve upon what they themselves signed," and called on Greek citizens to support a third way in the elections, away from both neoliberalism and all versions of leftist populism.

[03] Main opposition leader Meimarakis handed mandate to form gov't

ANA-MPA - President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos gave a mandate to main opposition leader Evangelos (Vangelis) Meimarakis to form a government, late on Thursday night, following the resignation of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras after a televised statement in which he asked Greeks to give him a clear mandate in national elections.

Meimarakis received the mandate by email at 00:07 on Friday morning. In his response letter, he said he would visit the president to receive the mandate in person, as the Greek Constitution does not foresee the receipt of an order to form a government through email.

According to ANA-MPA sources, the meeting of the two men will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
