  • [01] PM's intervention needed on issue of militants, Panousis says

ANA-MPA -- Alternate Minister for Civil Protection Yiannis Panousis said the personal intervention of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was needed to settle the issue of militant anti-establishment groups and their treatment by police, in statements published by the newspaper "Real News" on Easter Sunday.

"The time of Alexis Tsipras has come. Only the prime minister can solve this problem, completing and imposing a final policy line on this issue," Panousis said. He was referring to the stance adopted by police toward a rash of incidents involving hoodie-wearing rioters, protest occupations and rings operating within the prison system.

According to the article, Panousis has told the prime minister that, in his opinion, "the militants want a death in order to attempt a new "December 2008" - the weeks of rioting and unrest then sparked by the death of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos.

"The demands of those carrying out occupations are not the ordinary ones. They are political. And the State cannot negotiate with terrorists," Panousis said.

The minister also warned of a risk that far-right Golden Dawn will once again boost its following, criticising main opposition New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras in this context.

"Samaras is making a mistake by raising the issue of security in the way that he does. Only a blind man is unable to see that the specific agenda will bring no profit to his party, nor the toxic PASOK of Evangelos Venizelos, but will greatly raise the percentages of Golden Dawn," Panousis said.

[02] Church willing to use assets to pay off Greece's debts, Archbishop says

ANA-MPA -- Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece on Saturday indicated that he was willing to proceed with the exploitation of Church assets, acting together with the Greek state, on condition that the money raised would go toward paying off Greece's debt. In an interview with the private broadcaster Skai, he clarified that he was not talking about selling off Church property but its exploitation, so that it remained in Greek hands.

The archbishop said the issue would be discussed with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras "in good time".

Referring to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the archbishop noted that he had "no dispute with her, but whatever can be done for the Greek people would be welcome."

[03] Church and NGOs provide Easter lunch for homeless, very poor

ANA-MPA -- The Orthodox Church of Greece, charities and many local authorities on Sunday laid on a traditional Greek Easter feast, includng the ubiquitous roast lamb on a spit, for the homeless and those on very low incomes.

In Athens, the municipality's Foundation for the Homeless organised a festive meal for 650 people, while in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki a feast was laid on for 500 citizens in the Nea Elvetia park and the Piraeus municipality offered an Eastern meal at the Homeless Shelter.

The Athens Archepiscopate's charity "Apostoli", meanwhile, will distribute 10,000 meals to 5,000 people at soup kitchens operating in churches within its limits.

[04] Easter feast for the unemployed laid on by Armed Forces in Goudi

ANA-MPA -- In a show of solidarity toward the Greeks worst hit by the economic crisis in the country, the defence ministry and the Armed Forces on Sunday organised an Easter feast for the unemployed and other vulnerable groups in the Greek Army's Park in Goudi, an area in east Athens.

At least 2,000 portions have been prepared for distribution to beneficiaries, while there will also be performances by the Armed Forces band and a varied music and dance programme, with events starting at 11:30. The feast will be attended by Defence Minister Panos Kammenos, and the civilian and military leadership of the armed forces.

[05] Brussels Group video conference sets agenda for upcoming meetings on Greece

ANA-MPA -- The Brussels Group had a video conference lasting roughly an hour, in the context of the ongoing negotiations between Greece and the institutions representing its creditors, to plan upcoming meetings ahead of April 24, when euro zone finance ministers are to meet at the Eurogroup in Riga, Latvia.

The meeting was held late on Saturday afternoon and, according to a Greek finance ministry announcement was conducted in a "climate of cooperation," setting the content and agenda of thematic units that will be discussed over the coming days.
