  • [01] Metron Analysis poll gives SYRIZA strong lead over New Democracy

    ANA - MPA -- SYRIZA, the leading party in Greece's ruling coalition, has a strong lead of more than 20 percentage points over main opposition New Democracy among voters, according to a Metron Analysis poll for the newspaper "Parapolitika" unveiled on Thursday.

    Of those participating, 38.1 pct said they would vote for SYRIZA and 17.4 pct for ND, in response to the question: "How would you vote if elections were held next Sunday?" The opposition Potami party came third with 6.3 pct, followed by Golden Dawn with 4.6 pct, Communist Party of Greece (KKE) with 4.2 pct, PASOK with 3.6 pct, junior coalition partner Independent Greeks (ANEL) with 3.2 pct, the Union of Centrists (Enosi Kentroon) with 1.8 pct, the Movement of Democratic Socialists with 1.5 pct and 'Other Parties' with 2.8 pct. Of the remaining participants, 5.1 pct said they would cast a blank or spoiled vote, 4.9 pct said they would abstain, 4.8 pct said they were undecided and 1.7 pct declined to answer.

    In reply to the question "Are you in favour of the country remaining in the euro zone or in favour of returning to the drachma," 82 pct were in favour of remaining in the euro, 14 pct were in favour of returning to the drachma and 4 pct did not answer.

    Current premier Alexis Tsipras was chosen by 52 pct as most suitable for prime minister, sailing ahead of ND leader Antonis Samaras with 16 pct. The survey was conducted on April 2-4.
