ANA/MPA---Our responsibility is the "state coffers, therefore we must be prudent so that they are always full," Alternate Finance Minister Dimitris Mardas told ANA-MPA in an interview.

"The fact that there is money, there are resources that have not been touched and there is still a great possibility to cut some spending related to state procurement...we have all those possibilities. Either by improving taxes or improving spending, we can improve the budget figures," Mardas noted.

Regarding fuel smuggling – an issue Mardas as a professor at the Aristotle University dealt with in the past – he said: "There are already announcements. Mr. Sourlas has made a thorough study on the issue. Considering statements by Sourlas as well as by former government officials, one can ascertain that at least 1 billion euros can be saved. The study we made was a policy measures study…We have proposed a set of policy measures which we will implement. We have no other choice. There is a pledge by the prime minister on this issue and his position was particularly clear."

The full audio interview is available for subscribers at the ANA-MPA website.
