  • [01] Weather worsens as Greeks travel home to vote

ANA-MPA -- Greek voters travelling to their home town and villages to vote will be faced with difficult driving conditions this weekend as the weather takes a turn for the worse. Rain and storms are forecast on Saturday and Sunday, with colder temperatures and snow at higher altitudes, as well as strong southerly winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean.

Areas least affected will be those between Lamia, Volos, Attica and the northeast Peloponnese. EMY has issued a dangerous weather warning for Saturday and Sunday throughout western Greece (Epirus, western Macedonia, Ionian islands, western mainland and the west and southern Peloponnese), where the forecast is for strong rains, storms and snow above 700m.

Bad weather is also forecast in the north and eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese islands, including strong winds at sea. On Sunday, the stormy weather will migrate south the Cyclades islands and Crete but temperatures will remain relatively high due to the southerly winds.

The high winds may disrupt ferry services toward Aegean islands but winds in the Ionian sea are not expected to exceed a breezy 4-5 Beaufort.

After abating briefly on Sunday, the bad conditions will return on Monday and spread throughout the country, with a gradual improvement expected from Tuesday afternoon.
