  • [01] The stance of the troika is also a message to the upcoming SYRIZA government, SYRIZA MEP Papadimoulis says

ANA/MPA---The stance and the demands of the troika is a "result of the fact that it considers the government finished, granted, but it is also a message to the upcoming government of SYRIZA," SYRIZA MEP and vice president of the European Parliament Dimitris Papadimoulis said in an interview with ANA-MPA webTV.

"We will have difficulties ahead of us. What we claim is that with the strength of the Greek people's support, a government led by SYRIZA can negotiate and achieve better results than the government that says ‘Yes to everything," he said.

Asked about the government's negotiations with the troika, Papadimoulis underlined: "And the second (meeting in) Paris proved what the first one in early September had shown; that the red lines are set by the troika and that the result is humiliating for the government. Now the government went to Paris for the second time, requesting the return of the troika –which it would drive away. This alone shows the impasse of a government, which while it says ‘Yes to everything' to the troika, it pretends to be a lion hoping to convince Greek voters."

Regarding the election of the Greek President of the Republic, he stressed that an effort to have consensus on this issue could take place before the polls. "This is what (SYRIZA leader) Alexis Tsipras proposed when he visited the Greek President. Unfortunately, Mr. Samaras' hastiness to ‘torpedo' the proposal either for a meeting between Tsipras and Samaras or a meeting of all the political leaders under the President of the Republic eliminates this possibility. We, in SYRIZA, do not intend to knock on closed doors ... We believe that the Greek President must be elected with the widest possible consensus by a Parliament with a fresh popular mandate. This is the position of SYRIZA which I fully share and to the shaping of which I have contributed."

The full interview is available for subscirbers at the ANA-MPA webTV.
