  • [01] Venizelos to participate in Ministerial Conference on Stability and Development in Libya

ANA/MPA---Government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos will be in Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday, September 17, to participate in the Ministerial Conference on Stability and Development in Libya and North Africa, at the invitation of Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo, according to a ministry's announcement.

The Conference on Stability and Development in Libya and North Africa is an initiative of the Spanish Foreign Ministry, aimed at reaffirming the support of the countries of the region for the Libyan people and the Libyan government, as well as for cooperation on the regional level in handing the political problems and security issues that have arisen since the situation in Libya started to deteriorate this past July.

The Conference will be attended by the countries of the Med 7 Group (France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Malta, Portugal), countries bordering on Libya, and representatives of the European Union, the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Union for the Mediterranean.

[02] Development Minister Dendias on Tsipras' statement on 'red' loans

ANA/MPA---The need for sincereness to the Greek society is important and we cannot demand it only by businesses, Development and Competitiveness Minister Nikos Dendias said during his address to a conference entitled "National Strategy for Corporate Social Responsibility" organised by the General Secretariat of Commerce.

The political system should also follow the same rules, Dendias said.

The minister said that the main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras in his speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) referred to "red" loans deceiving citizens. Dendias noted that non-performing loans are less than 80 billion euros; including arrears to the state they amount to 100 billion euros and reach 110 billion euros if debts to social security funds are taken into account.

Tsipras referred to a new Seisachtheia of bad loans (Seisachtheia was a set of laws instituted by the Athenian lawmaker Solon regarding the cancelling of debts) amounting to 2 billion euros, Dendias said and wondered what the credibility of such a political system is.

Dendias also underlined the contribution of the Greek Presidency so that businesses release more data in addition to their financial figures, adding that the ministry's target is to adopt a new model of entrepreneurship.

[03] Court of Audit stops Attica Region grant for refurbishing Panathinaikos stadium

ANA/MPA---The Court of Audit on Monday stopped a grant approved by the Attica Region authority, under the previous regional governor Giannis Sgouros, finding the 7.0-million-euro grant for refurbishing the Panathinaikos FC stadium on Alexandras Avenue in central Athens to be illegal.

The court, after examining the agreement, found it was contrary to the public interest and also violated the principle of cost-efficiency given that the new stadium for Panathinaikos in the Votanikos district is due to be built within five years.

[04] Greece raises 1.3 bln euros from T-bill auction

ANA/MPA---Greece on Tuesday successfully auctioned a three-month Treasury bill issue draining 1.3 billion euros from the market at a slightly lower interest rate. The Public Debt Management Organization, in an announcement, said that bids submitted totaled 2.505 billion euros, or 2.51 times more than the asked sum, while the interest rate of the issue was set at 1.70 pct, from 1.75 pct in the previous auction of same issue in August 12. The organization said it will also accept non-competitive bids up to 30 pct of the asked sum by Thursday, 18 September.
