  • [01] President Papoulias pays official visit to Switzerland

ANA/MPA---President of Republic Karolos Papoulias is paying an official visit to Switzerland from Friday until Sunday.

Papoulias will meet with his Swiss counterpart Didier Burkhalter and with the Head of the Federal Department of Finance Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf.

On Saturday, the Greek president will visit CERN in Geneva following CERN's general director Rolf Heuer and afterwards he will visit UN headquarters.

Moreover, Papoulias will have a series of meetings with representatives of the Greek communities and associations of Zurich.

[02] Tsipras: SYRIZA's efforts in Europe a 'David against Goliath' battle

ANA/MPA---Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Thursday expressed his confidence over the outcome of the elections, especially of the Euroelections, pointing out that "across Europe, they look at us with great hope and expectation."

Tsipras, who gave an interview to TV station ALPHA, referred to the correlation of forces in the upcoming Euroelections and said SYRIZA's effort to subvert the course of events in Europe to the benefit of the people, particularly in the south, was like David's battle against Goliath.

SYRIZA is at the centre of everyone's attention, he said and added there was a special interest in the party's efforts.

Asked on the fact he did not participate in the debate organized by Maastricht University, Tsipras referred to his tour of visits around Europe and said he didn't dodge the fight, adding that those who claimed he did should also consider the denial of the European socialdemocracy and European right's representatives to participate in a debate by the Athens Kapodistrian University.

He also said he would take part in the main debate, to be organized by EBU at the European Parliament on May 15.

Regarding his party's stance on the Euro, Tsipras noted that party's members are entitled to different views and underlined that "we have one declaration. We have collective processes and collective positions voted by our Congress, which say that our priority is to save the country within the euro and not save the euro in Greece by dismantling society and destroying the Greek people."

Regarding the referendum issue, Tsipras said that "referenda are a part of our strategic direction, as the only support we will have is that of the people…We will not get the support of those who support today's government."

[03] 'Pink Panthers' gang members arrested in Athens

ANA/MPA---Three Serbian nationals were arrested in Athens, alleged to be members of the notorious gang "Pink Panthers" who are responsible for thefts of grand larceny.

The three Serbs and another person, that is at large, consisted a group that has committed over 30 burglaries at jewellery shops and car thefts in the wider Athens region. The loot is estimated at 550,000 euros.

The gang stormed with a stolen car breaking the storefront and took the jewellery from the showcases and afterwards fled with other stolen vehicles or motorcycles.

Greek police will make official announcements on Friday noon.
