  • [01] Arms cache found in car parked at Paleo Faliro

ANA-MPA - A weapons-laden car found parked in the southern suburb of Paleo Faliro on Saturday carried among other things four anti-tank RPG rockets with their propulsive mechanisms and a launcher, weapons first used in Greece against the United States Embassy in Athens in 2007 by the Revolutionary Army organization.

Also found in the trunk of the car were four F1 hand grenades with their firing devices, three Kalashnikovs with seven clips and boxes of bullets for the same guns, and two Kalashnikov grips, according to the Greek Police headquarters. Gloves and hoods were also found.

The same type of rockets had been found in a Revolutionary Army (Epanastatikos Agonas) hiding place in the Kypseli district of Athens. The group had also attempted to hit the New Democracy offices on Syngrou Avenue in 2013, which they followed up by opening fire with Kalashnikovs.

The car where the arms were hidden, an Opel Astra stolen from Keratea in eastern Attica on January 1, had been parked on Aghia Kyriaki Street in Paleo Faliro and placed under surveillance by the antiterrorism service ten days ago. It had new licence plates but special equipment and a trained dog had detected the weapons.
