[01] Parliament to vote on suspension of state funding for Golden Dawn

The parliament's ethics committee recommended the suspension of extreme-right Golden Dawn's funding and parliament is expected to pass the recommendation with a majority of deputies, as indicated by the debate late Tuesday at the parliament plenum.

All parties with the exception of Golden Dawn agreed with the ethics committee, which decided on grounds that the party operates as a criminal organisation; currently the party is facing court charges of operating as a criminal organisation.

However, the Independent Greeks (ANEL) party expressed some reservations.

"EAS will neither close down, undergo liquidation, nor will it go ahead with layoffs, and its export nature is safeguarded," Gennimata said, adding that "the deal meets national defence needs and ensures supplies to Armed Forces."

The deputy minister said that the company will be restructured while in operation "with Greek taxpayers no longer paying a penny. Many jobs are being guaranteed, while there will be voluntary redundancy for those who leave."

"It is up to us to prove in December 2014 that the company is viable and has serious prospects," Gennimata stressed, adding that for this reason not even a single day should be wasted.

"We will stand by the side of management and workers. Together, we can succeed," she concluded.
