    Unemployment in Greece jumped to 27.4 percent in September from 26.0 percent in the same month last year, and 27.3 percent in August, with the number of unemployed shooting to 1,376,463 million, the independent Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said on Wednesday.

    Unemployment among youth up to 24 years of age dropped to 51.9 percent from 56.7 percent in September last year, while unemployment among women shot to 31.4 percent from 30.2 percent. Unemployment among men also rose to 24.5 percent from 22.9 percent last year.

    Age-wise, the hardest hit was the 15-24 age bracket that shot to 59.1 percent from 56.7 percent in September 2012, followed by the 25-34 age group with 36.8 percent (34.5 percent in September 2012), the 35-44 age bracket with 24.4 percent (22.3 percent), the 45-54 age group with 20.3 percent (19.9 percent), the 55-64 age bracket with 15.1 percent (13.8 percent) and the 65-74 age group with 9.0 percent (5.5 percent).

    By region, the highest unemployment was posted in Macedonia Thrace with 30.4 percent from 26.6 percent, Epirus-Western Macedonia at percent 30.0 percent from 27.6 percent in September 2012, followed by Attica -- where two-thirds of the country's population resides -- with 27.9 percent from 27.8 percent. Thessaly-Sterea with 26.3 percent from 26.6 percent, the Peloponnese-Western Greece-Ionian Islands with 25.6 percent from 24.0 percent, the Aegean islands with 21.5 percent from 19.6 percent, and Crete with 25.0 percent from 21.5 percent.
