  • [01] SYRIZA on parl' president's decision to refuse meeting

AMNA--Main opposition SYRIZA on Tuesday sharply criticised Parliament president Evangelos Meimarakis' rejection of a request by SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras to convene an extraordinary parliament plenary session to discuss the "dramatic developments in Cyprus".

In an announcement, SYRIZA stated that the "Parliament president's announcement comes as a surprise".amna

"Prime Minister Antonis Samaras fears parliament, he fears the people and the light. He is accustomed to subjugation to the behind-the-scenes and is terrified of a dialogue 'at the forefront', in parliament", SYRIZA charged.amna

The main opposition party also noted that "due to the criticality of the developments and the huge responsibilities of the three-party government in their formation, with Cyprus' Hellenism as the victim, SYRIZA demands that the Greek people be fully informed on Prime Minister Samaras' criminal stance at the EU Summit and of Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras' at the Eurogroup meeting".amna

Moreover, SYRIZA sends a message that it will do whatever possible to reveal what is hidden behind Samaras' complicity in the EU's decision that has brought turmoil not only in Cyprus and Greece but also in Europe".amna

It charged evasion, maneuvering, alibis and interpretation at will of the Rules of Parliament, which do not convince anyone.

[02] PM to meet with coalition partners on Tuesday

AMNA--Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has called a meeting with the leaders of the parties supporting the government in light of the rapid developments in Cyprus.

The meeting between Samaras and PASOK party leader Evangelos Venizelos and Democratic Left party leader Fotis Kouvelis will be taking place at the Maximos Mansion at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.amna

On Monday, Samaras, in a statement on Cyprus, stressed that "Greece was supportive and is supportive on the ordeal of Cyprus. In any case, Greece has also been experiencing a tough ordeal over the past three years. But you must remember: Prosperity and growth will return soon. And in Cyprus and in Greece".

Samaras further said "the ability of Hellenism to withstand difficulties and progress has been proved many times. It will be proved again," adding that "provided that we do not lose faith in ourselves and remain standing. We shall emerge stronger and more united from the crisis".

[03] Trading of Cyprus Bank, Cyprus Popular Bank shares suspended

AMNA--The Athens Stock Exchange on Tuesday temporarily suspended trading on shares of Cyprus Bank Public Company Limited and Cyprus Popular Bank Public Co. Ltd (COB), for Tuesday and Wednesday (March 19 and 20), following a request by Capital Market Commission after being informed by the Capital Market Commission of Cyprus on the latter's decision to suspend operation of the Cyprus Stock Exchange on those two days.

[04] 'The Muslim World of Western Thrace' photo exhibition at Benaki Museum

AMNA--"Thrace. So close, so far away: The Muslim world of western Thrace" is the title of a photography exhibition by Pepi Loulakaki, which opens Tuesday at the Benaki Museum in Athens.

What does the contemporary Greek know about the closed-off world of Muslim Thrace?

The photographer Pepi Loulakaki, gaining access to the Muslim community (Pomaks, Turks, Roma and Sudanese), succeeds – for the first time – in focusing her lens on the personal life of modern Muslim women, on children in minority schools and during their playtime, according to the organisers of the exhibition.

In doing so she introduces us to our "unknown" fellow citizens in their daily lives. For when people and cultures come into contact, the space for dialogue and cultural exchange grows, and, conversely, the extent of prejudice shrinks, the organisers continue.amna

Loulakakis' fellow worker and traveler in this project, from which a book of the same name has arisen, is journalist Elena Moschidi, who wrote the texts.
