  • [01] SYRIZA leader in Brazil

AMNA--Main opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras will meet with president of the ruling Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) Rui Falcao and other party leaders on Monday at Sao Paolo, Brazil.

According to a SYRIZA statement, Tsipras is heading a delegation that will hold a working lunch with the WP officers and later meet separately with the largest private sector labour union and leaders of the Partido Socialismo e Libertado.amna

Also scheduled for Monday is a visit to a Movimento dos Sem Terra farm and meetings with the Patria Livre, Comunista do Brasil and Socialista Brasileno parties. The day's events will wrap up with an open discussion at WP's amphitheatre.

[02] PM calls for initiatives by foreign businesses in Greece

AMNa--Representatives of 13 multinational companies operating in Greece met with Prime Minister Antonis C. Samaras at his office in Maximos Mansion on Monday morning and were briefed by him on the government's targets to improve infrastructure and create new jobs.

The meeting was also attended by Ministers of Finance Yannis Stournaras and Development Costis Hatzidakis, and Deputy Development Minister Notis Mitarakis.amna

Samaras asserted that the country's competitiveness had improved and that the issue of its exiting the eurozone had ended. The new investment draft bill would change the landscape, he said, and he called on the business officers to intensify their presence in Greece and introduce new products. Both sides will hold a follow-up meeting a month from now.

    [03] Evros border fence complete

AMNA--Work on a fence across the Greek border with Turkey in Evros, designed to deter the entry of illegal migrants from Turkey to Greece, was finally completed on Saturday according to the contractor in charge of the project. The CEO of the construction firm 'Dagres ATE' Petros Dagres told AMNA that the project was now finished and all that remained was for the public order and citizen protection ministry to accept delivery.

The fence spans a distance of 10,365 metres, all along the length of the land border between the Kastanea guard post and the Evros river, and is four metres high, so that it cannot be climbed without mechanical assistance.amna

Dagres noted that its construction used 6,000 square metres of concrete, 800 tonnes of steel, 20,700 metres of barbed wire fencing, 140,000 metres of razor wire and 210,000 metres of wire. He said that delays in the completion of the project were due to unfavourable weather conditions prevailing in the area during winter months and also delays in finalising the planning for its location, completed on May 3. Also, he added, work could not start until problems with an optic fibre network that had preceded its construction were corrected.amna

Work on the project finally began on May 5 and the final cost came to 3.16 million euro, which was the amount in the initial contract with no overruns.
