  • [01] Labour minister to meet striking steel workers' union on Fri.

AMNA/ Labour Minister Yiannis Vroutsis will meet on Friday with union officials representing striking workers at the Hellenic Steel (Elliniki Halyvourgia) mill in Aspopyrgos, part of efforts to end a nine-month strike in the plant.

Earlier on Monday, the minister accepted the union's demand for a ministry's initiative for a dialogue without "force and the presence of the police".

Riot police broke up a blockade of the steel mill by striking workers and their supporters, including members of the Communist Party-affiliated PAME grouping, in a bid to allow workers that didn't want to strike to enter the premises.

[02] Work stoppage 11-1 on Tuesday in Athens Metro, ISAP trains

AMNA/ The Athens Metro and ISAP trains will not be running from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday as drivers called a two-hour work stoppage in protest over the remand of a colleague, by order of a prosecutor, following an incident shortly before midnight at ISAP's Attiki station involving a passenger who fell onto the train tracks, without being injured.

The drivers said in an announcement that the fact that the passenger suffered no serious injury is due to the train driver's immediate and calm-headed reaction. "Although there was no fatal injury, the duty prosecutor ordered the remand of the driver at a police station overnight, so as to appear before the day prosecutor who would decide to lift the restriction," the announcement said.

"Because the remand is counter to the directive according to which (train) drivers are not remanded if they give testimony" the drivers will hold a work stoppage in protest of the way the incident was handled, the announcement added.

[04] 17 arrests in drug smuggling, trafficking ring in Trikala prison

AMNA/ Seventeen (17) people have been arrested, including a prison employee and a teacher conducting classes for inmates, at the Trikala prison in northwestern Greece in an ongoing investigation into a ring that smuggled into and trafficked narcotic substances in the penitentiary.

The arrests were made in a coordinated operation by police from Thessaloniki, Larissa and Trikala.

The arrestees include a prison employee, a teacher working with inmates and 11 inmates, most of which are serving time in Trikala prison, while case files have been drawn up by police for a further 12 people who so far have eluded arrest.

The mastermind of the gang, according to police, is a 37-yearold inmate of the Alikarnassos penitentiary who in the past had been an inmate at Trikala prison, where he became acquainted with the prison employee.

The investigation began in October 2011 with monitoring of the telephone calls of the suspects.

No details were released on the quantities of drugs trafficked or the sums of money involved. Official announcements will be made when the investigation, which is still ongoing, is completed.
