[01] PASOK leader given 3rd exploratory mandate to form government
AMNA--PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos on Thursday was given by President
of the Republic Karolos Papoulias the third exploratory mandate to form
a coalition government, after two previous mandates to New Democracy
leader Antonis Samaras and SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras proved fruitless.
"We will make every effort so that a government will be formed, as
the Greek people want it -- pro-Europe and with Greece in the euro
-- provided that all the political forces rise to the occasion" said
Venizelos, whose party posted third in Sunday's parliamentary elections,
as he accepted the mandate.amna
"We will exhaust every possibility, we will do everything we can to
facilitate, in good will, your own task in the deliberation you will
have with the political party leaders," Venizelos told Papoulias.amna
Under the provisions of the Constitution, if the three mandates to
the leaders of the top three parties emerging from elections fail, a
fourth and final effort to form a government is made at a meeting of the
Council of the Political leaders of the parties elected to parliament,
under the President of the Republic.
