  • [01] Samaras unveils ND platform on society

    AMNA--New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras unveiled his party's platform on society, the institutions and citizens' security on Thursday, calling for change of the country's model of governance.

    Speaking at the Zappion press center, Samaras said ND's target after the elections is to change the models of both the economy and governance. "We need to sign a social pact with the Greek people on what we must change.

    "Greece is a country, not a place, and the Greeks are a people, not a population. The big reversal can come about only with the clear mandate of the Greek people. The messages for ND are very positive," he said.amna

    Among the changes envisaged are a revision of the Constitution, change of the law on ministerial accountability, incompatibility of ministerial and MP posts (meaning that an individual cannot be both), he said.

    Samaras pledge to form a small Cabinet that would gradually be reduced to 10 ministers and reiterated his commitment for an audit of the 'source of wealth' statements of all individuals who have served in government posts from 1974 onwards.amna

    On security, he reiterated his commitment to clamp down on illegal immigration, "to take back our cities", while he also promised efficient policing and enhancement of the citizens' security, and to "take the hoods off" the marginal elements that cause violence.

    [02] Samaras: National policy for culture

    AMNA--New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras on Wednesday pledged to bring a national policy for culture, during his meeting with people of the arts and letters at the Mihalis Cacoyannis Foundation building.

    Samaras presented his proposal on a unified Education, Culture and Sports Ministry and referred to the need for a large cultural park in the area surrounding the National Archaeological Museum in Athens to be created, a project that can be carried out with the help of sponsors.amna

    The ND leader called on the people of the arts and letters to help so as to de-vilify terms and ideas such as homeland, God, entrepreneurship, development and security, adding that "the people believe in you more than they do in politicians and a call on you to show solidarity".amna

    ND' platform on governance will be unveiled on Thursday and in the evening Samaras will speak at a campaign rally in Sparta.

    [03] Participation in PSI bond swap at 96.9 percent

    AMNA--Private-sector participation in the PSI bond swap programme has reached 96.9 percent, Finance Minister Filippos Sahinidis announced on Wednesday. The finance ministry said the third and final settlement in the bond swap programme was concluded on Wednesday, reducing the value of Greek state bonds with a total nominal value of 199 billion euro.
