AMNA / The inclement weather, complete with heavy snowfall and strong winds, caused problems across the country on Tuesday. Meteorologists expect improved weather conditions later in the week.

In the greater Athens region, traffic was interrupted on the Mt. Penteli ring road, affecting numerous northern Athens districts. Snow chains were necessary for vehicles

heading towards all of the highground surrounding greater Athens.

Freezing temperatures and scattered clouds were the norm in northern Greece, while in the province of western Macedonia, NW Greece, temperatures dropped several degrees below zero.

A total of 37 mountain villages in the northwest prefecture of Grevena were declared in a state of emergency because of the heavy snowfall. Vehicles moving on parts of the provincial road network in central and western Macedonia need snow chains because of the recent snowfall and the icy road conditions. amna

In southern Greece, motorists traveling on the provincial road network in Corinth prefecture and on Kalamata-Sparta national motorway also needed snow chains.

Passenger ferries remained docked in the ports of Piraeus and Lavrio because of gale force winds blowing in central Aegean Sea. However, passenger ferries for the southern Aegean island of Crete were expected to set sail as scheduled. www.amna.gr
