  • [01] Samaras to Euro leaders: Commitment to back EU decisions

AMNA / Main opposition New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras on Wednesday took the initiative and addressed a high-profile letter to the heads of the European Commission, the Eurogroup, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to an announcement by the party's press office.

Samaras has reportedly come under intense pressure by European partners to sign "guarantees" that ND will support decisions emanating from the Oct. 26 EU summit, whereas the ND leader has strenuously stated that his "word is his bond" and that such demands are insulting, both for himself and the country.

The letter emphasises that during a meeting between the three political leaders supporting the current Lucas Papademos government -- held under the auspices of President Karolos Papoulias -- "it was agreed that the task of the new government is implementation of the decisions of the Eurozone's summit on Oct. 26, 2011, and implementation of the economic policy linked to these decisions." amna

Parliament majority PASOK party, main opposition ND and the small right-of-centre LA.O.S party back the current transitional government, with MPs and high-ranking cadres of all three parties holding ministerial portfolios.

Samaras further states that the new prime minister, Lucas Papademos, has already committed himself to fulfilling these tasks. Moreover, ND is committed to supporting the new prime minister and is steadfastly adhered to the success of fiscal restructuring and structural reforms, "for the trust of markets to be regained and economic growth to be achieved". www.amna.gr

"...ND fully supports the targets of fiscal adjustment, regarding the elimination of the deficit and the reversal of the momentum of the debt," the letter states.

In conclusion, Samaras clearly underlines that the commitment of the Greek people and of ND in the European Union and the Eurozone "is strong and irreversible. ND believes that Greece can exit from the crisis and safeguard (the country's) social cohesion." AMNA
