[01] Papandreou: A victory of democracy
AMNA--PASOK party leader and former prime minister George Papandreou,
speaking in Parliament on Tuesday evening during the ongoing debate on a
vote of confidence for the new government, said that the new government
under Lucas Papademos "is waging a war against the uncontrolled markets,
the tax evaders, the vested interests, the country's establishments
that in no way wanted the development of our overwhelming advantages
to be promoted, wanting the clientele state to be prolonged." amna
Papandreou termed the inter-party understanding a "victory of democracy"
and expressed his irritation over the fact that specific forces refused
to support the new government invoking ideological differences.
"To those asking why the Greek people should experience sacrifices, I
reply: In this war we were obliged to use whatever means we had. If these
sacrifices had not taken place, we would not be standing and today Greece
is standing. We would not have the solidarity of the other peoples."
"If we appear weak, lacking boldness and phobic, not only will the
painful sacrifices of the people be lost, but we shall see the exit from
the euro, the savings of households will be lost and we shall lose a
historic opportunity to place order in our home," Papandreou added. amna
