  • [01] Greek banks' dependence on ECB declines

    ANA-MPA/The Greek banks' borrowing from the European Central Bank decreased further in April, according to figures released by the Bank of Greece on Monday.

    The Greek banks' total debt to the ECB was 86.8 billion euros in April, down from 87.9 on March 2011.ana-mpa

    ECB has set as a condition for the new 30 billion euros package of state guarantee to the banks, the establishment of programmes for the gradual reduction of their dependence on liquidity from the ECB.

    [02] Cycling tour marks World Environment Day

    ANA-MPA/Hundreds of cyclists of all ages gathered on Sunday in downtown Athens to mark World Environment Day with a cycling tour and also to send a message of ecology, "healthy living", and quick and safe transport.

    The cycling tour started from Eleftherias Park, with the final destination being the coastal city of Faliro seven hours later.

    The Greek national cycling team took part in the event.

    The cycling tour was organised under the auspices of the Transport and Environment Ministries.

    [03] Underwater clean-up

    (ANA-MPA) -- A group of 17 scuba divers, 15 men and two women, from several diving schools in the greater Athens area participated on Sunday underwater clean-up of the popular Alimos beach in southern coastal Athens -- an initiative that coincided with World Environment Day.

    The volunteer divers, who were aided by the Greek coast guard, amassed several large garbage bags filled with all types of refuse. The initiative was one of 152 scheduled around the country in forests, beaches, parks and neighbourhoods on the occasion of event.

    [04] ASE opening: Decline

    Equity prices were declining at the opening of trade on Monday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index down 0.40 percent, standing at 1,328.38 points at 11:15 am, and turnover at 17.795 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving mostly downward, with the biggest gains in Insurance, up 1.96 percent; Oil and Gas, up 1.20 percent, and Construction, up 1.06 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Health, down 1.69 percent; and Personal and Household Goods, down 1.24 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 0.37 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 0.50 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was down 0.25 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 33 were up, 32 were down, and 15 were unchanged.
