  • [01] ASE opening: Decline

    Equity prices were declining at the opening of trade on Wednesday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index down 0.76 percent, standing at 1,567.78 points at 11:30 am, and turnover at 23.301 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving mostly downward, with the biggest gains in Food & Beverate, up 1.02 percent; and Raw Materials, up 0.89 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Chemicals, down 2.59 percent; and Banks, down 1.22 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 1.16 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 1.04 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was down 1.87 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 37 were up, 34 were down, and 17 were unchanged.

    The rises in the Greek deficit and debt, Standard & Poor's downgrading of Greece by two notches and strikes in the health and education sector were the main front-page items in Athens' dailies on Wednesday.
