[01] ND severely critical of PMMain opposition New Democracy (ND) severely criticised prime minister George Papandreou on Friday night over his comments after the conclusion of a two-day EU summit in Brussels.ND press spokesman Yiannis Michelakis bashed the premier on his criticism of ND's positions, stressing that the main opposition party has a duty to criticise the government's policy that is leading the economy to an impasse, the much more so when its criticism is proving true. He reiterated the position voiced by ND leader Antonis Samaras that the Memorandum was not working, noting the state revenues of the first two months of the year "which declined by 9 percent instead of increasing by 8 percent as predicted", and put the blame on the government "and all those who supported the Memorandum". Commenting on the Summit decisions, the ND spokesman recalled Samaras' statement that stabilisation and recovery of the economy, at both national and European level, are without saying correct targets, but cannot be achieved without growth and, mainly, cannot be achieved with permanent recession. Michelakis further said that countries that are in situations similar to Greece's are displaying much greater ability to negotiate, citing the examples of Ireland and Portugal "which promptly raised capital and thus today can negotiate, unlike the Papandreou government which, last year, neither raised capital when it could nor negotiated anything".
