  • [01] Freighter towed to safety

(ANA-MPA) -- An Albanian-flagged freighter adrift for four days in the western Aegean was towed to safety off a beach in Laconia prefecture of extreme southern Greece on Sunday.

The vessel, identified as the "Geri II", first experienced engine trouble near the island of Kythera. It was carrying a cargo of wood from Montenegro to Egypt.

[02] Prinkipo Orphanage returning to Ecumenical Patriarchate

(ANA-MPA) -- The Ecumenical Patriarchate is expected to receive the deed for the building that once housed the eponymous Prinkipo Orphanage on the Marmara Sea isle of Büyükada (Prinkipo) on Monday, following a decision by a first instance court on the island earlier this month.

The development comes after a June 2010 ruling by the European Human Rights Court returning the property to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Ecumenical Patriarchate Bartholomew has previously stated that the orphanage will be turned into an inter-faith centre for dialogue and peace. (ANA-MPA)

The orphanage was originally built as a hotel by renowned French architect Alexandre Vallaury in the 1890s. It was subsequently bought in 1903 and donated to the Patriarchate by Hélène Zafiropoulo-Zarifi, the wife of Ioannis Zarifi, (ANA-MPA) a banker to then Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid ll, with the stipulation that it be used as an orphanage for ethnic Greek children.

[03] German Dep. FM on bilateral ties

BERLIN (ANA-MPA) -- German Deputy Foreign Minister Werner Hoyer (FDP) estimated that in Germany "the courage and determination necessary for an elected government to pass on to its citizens extremely heavy burdens is being underestimated".

By contrast, he said Greece has launched a "huge reforms process that entails heightened burdens for each citizen."

"It's a decision could be implemented in only a few countries around the world," he noted, adding that "respect and understanding for Prime Minister George Papandreou's government should be more obvious to other countries." Hoyer's comments came on Friday during a Germany-Greece conference on the urgent problem of illegal immigration. (ANA-MPA)
