  • [01] Gov't policy aiding economic 'vicious cycle'

-P/Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras on Friday sharply attacked the government and what he charged is a so-called "alliance of the willing" formed to prop up the government's austerity measures, speaking to his party's Parliamentary group.

Samaras was indirectly referring to the formation of a new party under former foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis and the expulsion or fleeing of four ND deputies from the party's ranks.ANA-MPa

"We will not be allies to the government's dead-end policy; we offer consensus only if our country enters a course towards recovery, nothing more and nothing less," Samaras said.

"If they ask for consensus for a policy that leads to an impasse we will not provide it; if they want consensus for a policy that is sinking our country, they must look elsewhere for accomplices. Some are rushing to offer crutches and others want to enter into a 'willing alliance'," he charged.

[02] German Dep. FM on Athens-Berlin relations, eurozone support

BERLIN (ANA-MPA / G. Pappas) -- German Deputy Foreign Minister Werner Hauer (FDP) estimated that in Germany "the courage and determination necessary for an elected government to pass on to its citizens extremely heavy burdens is being underestimated".

By contrast, he said Greece has launched a "huge reforms process that entails heightened burdens for each citizen."ana-mpa

"It's a decision could be implemented in only a few countries around the world," he noted, adding that "respect and understanding for Prime Minister George Papandreou's government should be more obvious to other countries." Hauer's comments came on Friday during a Germany-Greece conference on the urgent problem of illegal immigration.

[03] NBG among top European banks

ANA-MPA/A recent share capital boosting programme has turned National Bank of Greece into a "fortress", Apostolos Tamvakakis, the bank's chief executive, stated on Friday. Addressing an extraordinary general shareholders' meeting, Tamvakakis said National Bank, with the completion of its recent capital increase, was among the top five European banks, based on its capital adequacy rate, currently at 15 pct.ana-mpa The Greek banker said this figure was unprecedented in the European banking system and stressed that the process to sell up to 20 pct of Turkey-based Finansbank will be completed in the first quarter of 2011, noting that this move was not "defensive" in nature, but an aggressive initiative, one which will be decided regardless of the current crisis.
