[01] Police operation to locate truck with illegal immigrants seized by gunmenPolice were still searching on Tuesday morning for a truck carrying 50 illegal immigrants that was seized by two gunmen from Aliens Bureau police, who were disarmed by the gunmen, in Aspropyrgos late Monday.���-�P�/Police had set up a roadblock on the Athens-Corinth national highway after a tip-off that a truck carrying illegal migrants would be passing by the spot en route to Corinth. The truck arrived at the designated point at about 11:20 p.m., but the driver, seeing the roadblock, abandoned the truck and ran off, disappearing. One of the police officers, accompanied by a colleague, took the wheel of the truck to drive it to the Aliens Bureau in downtown Athens, but when the truck reached the area of Aspropyrgos, it was cut off by two men in a car ,who fired shots in the air, dragged the police officers out of the truck and took their service guns. One of the gunmen drove off with the truck and the second gunman followed with the car. After a chase the gunman in the car, an Iraqi national, was arrested. An operation was ongoing to locate the truck with the illegal immigrants and the second gunman. Only two out of the 13 regions of the country reported n increase in building volume (Thessaly 9.6 pct, Central Macedonia 4.0 pct), while Attica (48 pct), Western Macedonia (47.9 pct) and Ionian Islands (41.6 pct) recorded the biggest percentage declines. In the seven-month period from January to July, building volume was down 24.8 pct and permits were down 10.6 pct. All 13 regions recorded declines.
