  • [01] Wildfire on Zakynthos contained

    A major wildfire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon near the village Aghia Marina on the Ionian island of Zakynthos was reported as having been contained on Thursday noon.

    The blaze had reached close proximity to the first houses of the village, but firefighters succeeded in halting its course, assisted by reinforcements from Patras and Andravida.

    An estimated 75 acres of forest land was devasted by the fire.

    [02] ASE opening: Rise

    Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Thursday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 0.99 percent, standing at 1,586.61 points at 11:00 am, and turnover at 12.684 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving upward, with the biggest gains in Food and Beverages, up 2.33 percent; and Insurance, up 1.48 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Media, down 1.07 percent and Oil, down 1.19 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 1.30 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.41 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.66 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 47 were up, 16 were down, and 12 were unchanged.
