[01] Papandreou-Netanyahu talks in Athens

Papandreou referred to very productive talks with his Israeli counterpart, both on Monday and during his own visit to Israel recently. He added that a joint Greek-Israeli committee will be set up to enable cooperation to proceed more creatively and strategically.

"Relations between Greece and Israel are not competitive with other bilateral or multilateral cooperation," the Greek prime minister said when asked whether such a committee might create problems with neighbouring Turkey.

Papandreou also said a meeting was decided between the corresponding tourism, finance and economy ministries so that mutual visits to the two countries by businesspeople and related investment initiatives can be organised.

"We do not believe that relations between Greece and Turkey and Israel and Turkey are competitive to relations we are developing with Israel," Papandreou emphasised, adding that "regional cooperation is of vital importance for good neighourliness, as well as for resolving problems in the region, which are many."

On his part, Netanyahu stressed that "I agree absolutely with every word that Mr. Papandreou said, it would be something unnatural if we do not strengthen relations between Greece and Israel." He added that Israel is interested in improving its relations with Turkey, but is also interested in developing its relations with Greece in all sectors.

Papandreou expressed certainty that the visit will be helpful in developing bilateral cooperation, as well as cooperation in such sectors as investments, tourism, energy, telecoms, IT services, water desalination and innovation technologies.

Cooperation will also take place in the sector of renewable energy sources, new farm technologies and security.

[02] 'Antikythera Mechanism' exhibition opens on Kythera

The exhibition opened on Aug. 11 in Potamos, Kythera while on Aug. 19 the exhibition will be transferred to Chora, the island's main town.

Visitors of the exhibition will be able to learn about the history of the ancient mechanism, believed to be an ancient mechanical calculator (also described as a primordial "mechanical computer") designed to calculate astronomical positions.

The artifact was discovered within an ancient shipwreck off the nearby isle of Antikythera, between Kythera and Crete . It has been dated to about 150-100 BC. Technological devises of similar complexity appeared a thousand years later, scholars have noted.

Temperatures on the islands will range from 36 to 39 degrees.

[04] Ecumenical Patriarch in Poland

Bartholomew will have a series of meetings with the President of the Polish parliament and will be bestowed the title of the honorary doctor of at the Catholic University of Lublin.

According to authorities, first estimates show that 4,000 hectares of brush land were torched, along with herds of animals and roughly 1,000 beehives.

Individual sector indices were moving mostly upward, with the biggest gains in Health, up 1.75 percent; and Telecoms, up 1.38 percent.

The only losses were in Commerce, down 0.21 percent.

The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 1.09 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.47 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.33 percent.

Of the stocks traded, 42 were up, 9 were down, and 10 were unchanged.
