  • [01] Gov't spokesman dismisses reshuffle rumours

    ANA-MPA/Government spokesman George Petalotis ruled out the likelihood of a reshuffle on Thursday stressing that "the government was hard at work to highlight the social and developmental dimensions of the policy followed."

    "We are interested in highlighting the social character of our policy in all sectors even those where the policy followed is very tough," he stressed.

    Petalotis also stated that "there is room for improvement in all sectors, including pensions and benefits."

    Referring to main opposition New Democracy (ND) party, he stressed that its governance has "left the people unprotected to deal with the crisis". He also stated that ND is responsible for the fact that the country had no other option than the Memorandum.

    [02] Cannabis plantation located near Thessaloniki

    ANA-MPA/The Police Drug Squad located in a countryhouse at Vassiloudi village near Thessaloniki, northern Greece, 205 cannabis plants and 385 pots with cannabis seeds ready for cultivation.

    The 56-year-old owner of the countryhouse was arrested together with a 41-year-old Ukranian and a 30-years-old Pakistani. The three suspects were alleged to jointly have maintained the plantation.

    Two packets of hashish totalling 43.3 grams was found on the spot.

    During a raid in the 56-year-old suspect's other house at Stavroupoli in Thessaloniki, police confiscated a small quantity of hashish while in the 41-year-old suspect's residence they found five cannabis plants and a pistol belonging to the suspect's 20-year-old son, who was also arrested.

    [03] Aliakmonas River youth festival rescheduled

    ANA-MPA/The "Aliakmonas River Youth Festival" this year will take place in early September. The festival was originally scheduled for July but it was postponed due to adverse weather.

    The festival is organised for the third consecutive year by Veria prefecture and is rescheduled for 3-5 September.

    [04] Two foreign nationals arrested for murder

    ANA-MPA/The perpetrators of a 22-year-old Pakistani's murder on August 6 in Nea Kios, Argolis prefecture, northern Peloponnese were arrested on Friday on Evia island.

    The victim was found dead by a fellow countryman in the basement where he was living.

    Argos police, acting on a tip-off and after conducting an investigation in cooperation with Evia police, located on Wednesday in Kymi, on Evia, two Pakistanis who were suspected of the homicide.

    During the examination the two suspects aged 27 and 21 confessed to having attacked the victim with axes and fatally injuring him. The perpatrators, who were living with the victim in the basement, said that they killed their compatriot for personal and financial reasons.

    The Nafplio prosecutor will issue an arrest warrant.

    [05] Border toll on cars with Greek or EU license plates leaving Bulgaria

    ANA-MPA/Bulgaria's decision to impose a 5-euro border toll on cars with Greek or EU license plates when leaving the country has caused the strong reaction of Greek and other European motorists. The toll is not imposed on Bulgarian motorists.

    The special toll that has been imposed for the past month is valid for one week meaning that motorists re-entering the country before it expires will not have to pay again.

    [06] Alt.FM talks with Davutoglu

    ANA-MPA/Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas held Thursday a telephone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on the latter's initiative, in light of the explosion of a home-made fire bomb (molotov cocktail) at the fencing of the Turkish Consulate General in Thessaloniki, in the early hours of Thursday.

    According to a foreign ministry press release, Droutsas briefed the Turkish minister on the incident and expressed the Greek government's sorrow. He also briefed Davutoglu on the Greek authorities' actions to investigate into the affair.
