  • [01] Papandreou in Turkey for SEECP summit

    ISTANBUL/ (ANA-MPA)- A.KOURKOULAS-Prime Minister George Papandreou arrived on Wednesday in Istanbul to participate in the Southeast European Cooperation Process (SEECP) Summit which started on Tuesday.

    Papandreou will also meet Turkish president Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. At noon the premier will visit Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos at the Phanar.Ana-Mpa

    A SEECP press conference is scheduled to take place at noon and afterwards the Turkish Prime Minister will host a lunch in honour of the heads of state and government attending the summit.

    [02] 2,500-year anniversary of Battle of Marathon

    The 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon will be commemorated with a number of events to take place at the archaeological site of Delphi, in south-central Greece, on July 2-4 within the framework of the annual European Cultural Centre of Delphi.

    The events include a symposium entitled "Marathon: The Day After", the screening of a movie-documentary entitled "2,500 years since the Battle of Marathon", directed by Maria Hatzimichali-Papaliou as well as an exhibition of paintings and sculptures entitled "Marathon: Eight Greek artists on Marathon".

    Additionally, the National Theatre of Northern Greece will stage Aristophanes' comedy "Acharnians".

    "Generations of people worldwide live and will continue to live with the 'myth of Marathon' and it is very important for everybody to learn the true story of Marathon," Administration Council of the European Cultural Centre of Delphi President and University of Europe President Helene Ahrweiler said.

    The events will be held under the aegis of the president of the Hellenic Republic and the ministry of culture and tourism.

    [03] DM Venizelos in Abu Dhabi

    Ana-Mpa/Issues concerning bilateral political, military and economic cooperation between the two countries, as well as the issue of Iran's nuclear programme, the situation in Afghanistan, the handling of international terrorism and the overall situation in the region of the Gulf and the Mediterranean were examined during the meeting Greek Defence Minister Evangelos Venizelos had in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday with the heir to the throne, the head of executive power and Alternate Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
