    Finance minister George Papaconstantinou on Friday urged everyone to contribute to the fight against corruption and tax evasion, during a morning visit to the headquarters of the ministry's Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE).

    Papaconstantinou noted a substantial improvement in the effort to crack down on such phenomena compared with the previous year, noting that SDOE had received 6,000 reports concerning tax evasion in the first five months of 2010 compared with barely 4,000 throughout all of 2009.

    Further, the SDOE has confirmed fines of 1.5 billion euros for tax evasion in the first five months of 2010, compared with 700 million euros in all of 2009.

    "Our aim is to restore justice," the minister said, and hinted at an intensification of audits and inspections in the coming period to clamp down on tax evasion.

    [02] Stocks end 1.86 pct higher

    Greek stocks ended significantly higher in the Athens Stock Exchange on Friday, with the composite index of the market rising 1.86 pct to end at 1,542.99 points. It ended 3.96 pct higher on the week. Turnover was an improved 129.476 million euros. The FTSE 20 index jumped 1.96 pct, the FTSE 40 index ended 0.97 pct higher and the FTSE 80 index rose 2.32 pct. Telecommunications (6.29 pct) and Chemicals (4.28 pct) scored the biggest percentage gains of the day, while Media (2.10 pct) and Food (0.27 pct) suffered losses.

    Broadly, advancers led decliners by 129 to 42 with another 48 issues unchanged. Lavipharm (19.67 pct), Elastron (16.67 pct) and Euroholdings (15.38 pct) were top gainers, while Sarandopoulos Mills (14.38 pct), Xylemporia (9.62 pct) and Eltrak (8.66 pct) were to losers.
