  • [01] Strike at Piraeus port

All Greek-flag ships remained at port in Piraeus on Monday due to a 24-hour strike by the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) in protest of the government's plan to lift cabotage restrictions.

A repeat strike will be staged on Friday, April 30.

Greek seamen are protesting the imminent lifting of cabotage (regulations restricting coastal shipping to domestic vessels) announced by prime minister George Papandreou, which will allow foreign cruiseships to use the Greek sea routes and ports.

Monday's strike means that 20 ships will not carry out scheduled routes to the islands of the Aegean, Crete and the Dodecanese Islands complex, while strikers will gather at the port of Piraeus for the arrival of the Malta-flag cruiseship 'Zenith'.

    [02] Tsipras attacks PM

Launching a personal attack against Prime Minister George Papandreou for resorting to the EU-IMF support mechanism, Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) Parliamentary group leader Alexis Tsipras on Sunday repeated a proposal for a national referendum on whether Greece should remain within the mechanism.

Tsipras stressed that Papandreou had made the decision without consulting anyone - not even his own cabinet, party and Parliamentary group - while there had been no discussion in Parliament.

He also slammed a decision that he said was pushing Greece into the arms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the worst possible terms and would take the country decades back.

SYRIZA's leader said both PASOK and main opposition New Democracy bore grave responsibility for creating an unproductive model of growth supported on excessive consumption, easy credit and easy turnover, big ideas, corruption and graft. But while the previous ND government had pushed this model to its limit, it was the clumsy and criminal choices made by the PASOK government of the last six months that brought the country to "ground zero and the brink of social bankruptcy," Tsipras said.

He criticised the government for failing to consider alternatives to borrowing on the markets in order to service its debts, such as pushing for the issue of Eurobond or to be allowed to borrow directly from the European Central Bank, or to join an alliance with other southern European countries facing similar problems and refusing to issue a national bond for internal borrowing.

    [03] Panathinaikos wins Cup Final

Panathinaikos prevailed as top team of the 2009/2010 season on Saturday, securing both the Greek Superleague title and the Cup with its 1-0 victory over Thessaloniki's Aris FC in the Cup Final match at the Olympic Stadium of Athens.

The winning goal was scored by midfielder Sebastian Leto in the 64th minute, securing for the Athens team their 17th Cup in Panathinaikos' history and forcing the side from the north to concede yet another in a long string of defeats in its bid for the Cup, which it hasn't won since 1970.
