  • [01] Athens: Meeting on illegal migration

Greece's Citizens' Protection Minister Mihalis Chryssohoidis, who holds the law enforcement portfolio, has written to Turkey's Interior Minister Besir Atalay and formally requested a meeting some time in February to discuss ways of stemming the tide of illegal migrants crossing from Turkish territory into Greece.

"Only systematic and close cooperation between Greece and Turkey can reduce the flow of illegal migration toward the European Union," Chryssohoidis stressed in the letter sent on Jan. 27, adding that he anticipates a positive response from the Turkish side.

The minister also highlighted the ever-worsening problems caused by both illegal migration and organised crime in both countries.

"The challenges that we face are complex and shared, since the problem has taken on massive dimensions over the past decade, with geometric growth of the flow each year from both the land and sea borders of our countries," he stressed.

Regarding the specifics of their discussion, Chryssohoidis suggested that improvements can be achieved via applying the 2001 bilateral readmission protocol signed by Greece and Turkey, through cooperation between the coast guards of the two countries, through a readmission agreement between the European Union and Turkey and through extended cooperation between Greece, Turkey, Iran and Pakistan on migration issues, possibly including Afghanistan as well.

Chryssohoidis added that the primary aim would be to prevent the illegal movement of people by striking at the migrant-trafficking networks, while noting that Greek and Turkish cooperation will also be extremely useful in targeting organised crime, drug-trafficking and in coping with natural disasters.
