  • [01] Greek farmers begin protest road blocks

Protest action by farmers was escalating on Friday, with the first tractor road blocks appearing on national highways. The majority of farmers involved in Friday's protests belonged to the Nationwide Coordinating Body for farmers.

Farmers from Kavala blocked the Egnatia highway at the Chrysopolis intersection for one hour, while in Evros they were gathering around the Ormenio and Kipi border crossings and at Soufli, while they are due to decide on whether to block roads on Sunday.

Kastoria farmers were due at the Vogatsikos intersection at 2:00 p.m. where they would intermittently block traffic every hour from Kastoria to Thessaloniki and from Kastoria to Albania.

Farmers from Florina and Amyntaios and others from Grevena were heading toward the Niki border crossing, which they intend to blockade, while Prespes farmers will gather at the Krystallopigi border crossing on Sunday.

All across northern Greece, meanwhile, local farmer associations were holding meetings to decide whether to join in the action.
