[01] ND candidates agree on election processThe three candidates for the main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leadership on Tuesday expressed agreement on all matters concerning the process of electing a new ND president, after a meeting with organisation committee chairman Dimitris Sioufas, party secretary Lefteris Zagoritis and ND general director Menelaos Daskalakis, five days ahead of Sunday's election.Sioufas said that the meeting examined the entire course to Sunday "when ND will take an important for the election of the party leader by the ND grass roots". He added that the three candidates agreed on all the matters concerning the election, both in the first round this Sunday and in a second round the following week if required. Candidate Dora Bakoyannis, former foreign minister and ex-Athens mayor, said that a major effort was made, resulting in agreement among all the candidates. She also called on all the party members to turn out on Sunday, stressing that "the election of a party leader is a very serious cause", adding that, with everyone's cooperation, everything will go well. Fellow candidate Antonis Samaras, former culture minister, said that there was excellent cooperation on all the issues. The third candidate, Thessaloniki prefect Panagiotis Psomiadis, said that he was in agreement on all points, adding that "united, we can emerge stronger on the morning after". [02] Greek navy officers commended by IMO for "exceptional services" in anti-piracy effortGreek naval officers were among the recipients of Certificates for Exceptional Services Rendered to Shipping and Mankind awarded by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) during a special ceremony in London on Tuesday night, held in the context of the organisation's 26th general assembly.The Greek officers were honored for their participation in the international efforts to repress piracy off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden. Certificates were presented to the Commanding Officers, or their representatives, of navy ships from EU and NATO member countries and several other individual countries from various regions, namely from Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States. The Certificates for the Greek officers were presented to Greek Lt. Commanders Panagiotis Lymberis and Antonis Papaioannou, at a ceremony attended by Greece's minister for the economy, competitiveness and shipping Louka Katseli, who is representing Greece at the IMO general assembly that winds up on Wednesday, and Greek ambassador in London Vassilis Pispinis. [03] Auction of noted Greek artists' works at ZappeionA total of 260 works by 161 noted Greek painters of the 19th and 20th centuries will be auctioned by auction house "Vergos" on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the Zappeion Mansion in Athens.The auction includes works by Alexis Akrithakis, Spyros Vassiliou, George Gaitis, George Gounaropoulos, Nikos Eggonopoulos, Nikos Kessanlis, Yannis Tsarouchis and Alekos Fassianos. The paintings will be in display at Zappeion from Wednesday, 2 December, to Friday, 4 December, between 10 am and 10 pm. [04] ASE opening: DeclineEquity prices were declining at the opening of trade on Wednesday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index down 1.48 percent, standing at 2,392.58 points at 11:15 a.m., and turnover at 51.5 million euros.Individual sector indices were moving mostly downward, with the only gains in Travel and Recreation, up 0.85 percent; Oil & Gas, up 0.47 percent; and Construction, up 0.26 percent. The biggest losses were in Health, down 5.86 percent; Banks, down 2.75 percent; and Technology, down 2.44 percent. The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 1.82 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 1.31 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was down 1.30 percent. Of the stocks moved, 38 were up, 95 were down, and 24 were unchanged.
