[01] 'Conspiracy of Cells of Fire' suspect receives extension for testimonyA 22-year-old woman arrested for alleged involvement in the "Conspiracy of Cells of Fire- Faction of Nihilists" urban terror group asked for and received an extension until Wednesday for giving testimony, in an appearance on Monday before examining magistrate Antigone Helioti. The detainee faces three felony charges for participation in a terrorist group; several counts of acquisition, construction and possession of explosive materials and bombs; and causing an explosion in complicity with others. According to the accused's defence attorney Dimitris Kappos, the woman denies all the charges and claims that she does not know any of the other three co-defendants, while she also maintains that she had never gone to the group's safehouse in the northern Athens suburb of Halandri. The woman was arrested in central Athens on Friday evening after clashes between riot police and self-styled "anti-state" activists in Exarchia, while three other suspects linked with the "Conspiracy of Cells of Fire" group were arrested on September 23 during a police raid in what authorities labelled a "bomb-making" safehouse in Halandri. The three have been remanded in custody pending trial, while arrest warrants have been issued for six more individuals. According to Kappos, the woman's fingerprints found by police in the Halandri safehouse were on a "movable object" and not on a stationary spot. A group of approximately 50 youths had gathered outside the court complex at Evelpidon street in support of the 22-year-old woman, a university student, and shouted slogans as she was taken to and from the examining magistrate's office. By ruling of the prosecutor assigned to the case, the release of the woman's name has been allowed due to the gravity of the case. All four of the other suspects have also denied any wrongdoing in statements before an examining magistrate. The case case of the "Conspiracy Fire Cells - Faction of Nihilists" urban terrorist group, described as an anti-state anarchist cell, has been assigned, due to its gravity, to a Court of Appeals Examining Judge following a recommendation by Supreme Court Judge Ioannis Tentes. The plenum of the Court of Appeals Judges unanimously last week appointed Dimitris Flegas in charge of the case, while Constantinos Baltas was appointed assistant examining judge. [02] Wild birds closely monitored at the Forest Research InstituteResearchers at the Forest Research Institute's (FRI) farm in Vassilika, near Thessaloniki, have been conducting systematic bird ringings since May 2007. The specific technique is applied once or three times a month in the early morning hours in an effort to record the bird species that reproduce, pass through or spend the winter in the institute's farm. The birds are captured in special nets called mist nets to avoid injuries.A total of 70 different bird species have been recorded in the FRI farm and 50 of them have been ringed. Most of them are small in size, while there are also larger birds of prey, such as falcons. The green parrot is an imported species that has managed to adapt to the European climate conditions after leaving captivity, forming colonies in many urban or semi-urban regions. Bird ringing is a technique used in the study of wild birds, by attaching a small, individually numbered, metal or plastic tag to their legs or wings, so that various aspects of the bird's life can be studied, thus allowing the researchers to trace the same individual.
